Andy Barcham struck the decisive goal to send Gillingham into the second round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win at Bury. Barcham, on loan from Tottenham, scored with a low header in the 73rd minute to give the visitors a barely-deserved victory. Bury were the brighter throughout and could have gone in front after two minutes when Andy Morrell had a powerful left-foot shot deflected wide. Andy Bishop twice went close for Bury. The striker had one shot well-saved by Alan Julian, before he fired another high and wide. Bishop also had a penalty appeal turned down in the second-half, and Morrell squandered a point-blank chance from a corner. Gillingham midfielder Curtis Weston hit a curling free-kick straight at Wayne Brown, before eventually turning provider for Barcham to head home.
