Tractor Boys come from behind to seal win

Ipswich Town came from behind to beat Bristol City 3-1 at Portman Road to move up to 11th in the Championship three points off the play-offs. Bristol City began brightly and opened the scoring after just five minutes through Stern John. The away side held the lead until early in the second half but then pressed the self-destruct button as Ipswich scored three goals in seven minutes. Jonathon Walters equalised for the home side after 49 minutes before Pablo Counago fired them into a 51st minute lead. The Tractor Boys completed the scoring five minutes later when Liam Fontaine put through his own net. Town boss Jim Magilton made one change following his side's East Anglian derby defeat against Norwich, with striker Jon Stead replacing midfielder Owen Garvan while Bristol City were unchanged following their weekend draw with Swansea City. The home side nearly broke the deadlock early on through Counago, but the Spaniard's flicked header from a Stead knock down was cleared off the line by City's Brian Wilson. From the resulting attack, the visitors took the lead when John headed in an Ivan Sproule right-wing cross on five minutes.

Pressure

City nearly doubled their advantage soon after when Nicky Maynard had a 10-yard drive well saved by Ipswich goalkeeper Richard Wright. Veliche Shumulikoski stung the hands of Bristol City goalkeeper Adriano Basso with a 30-yard drive as the Suffolk side searched for an equaliser. Darren Ambrose came close after being played in by a clever Counago reverse ball but saw his curled effort tipped round the post by Basso. City winger Michael McIndoe had a shot from an acute angle easily saved by Wright, while Marvin Elliott fired just wide from 30 yards. Ambrose had another good chance as the first half drew to a close, again after being played in by Counago on the left, but shot straight at Basso. Ipswich started the second half brightly and were level on 49 minutes through Walters.
Equaliser
The winger latched onto a Stead knockdown and fired in off the inside of the far post from just inside the area. A minute later Ipswich took the lead when an unmarked Counago headed in a Moritz Volz cross from the centre of the penalty area. To cap a blistering start to the second half, Ipswich went further ahead after 56 minutes, this time through an own goal from Fontaine. The left-back intercepted a Stead pass as Walters bore down on goal but could only divert the ball past Basso. Ipswich were now looking dangerous with every attack but their momentum was halted in the 60th minute when defender Alex Bruce was sent off for a two-footed lunge on Maynard. Maynard left the pitch on a stretcher with his leg in a brace. The dismissal gave the visitors renewed impetus. Substitute Lee Trundle nearly reduced the deadlock but his side-footed effort from a Fontaine cross was deflected wide by Ipswich skipper Gareth McAuley. There were few other chances as Ipswich sat back to defend their two-goal lead.
