Bobby Convey believes it is vital that Reading retain the services of their key players so the club continues to progress.
Last season, Reading enjoyed a highly successful season in the Premier League, falling just short of a UEFA Cup spot.
Manager Steve Coppell lost Steve Sidwell to Chelsea and England defender Nicky Shorey is now a prime target for West Ham.
The winger is wary of the quality in the Premier League and is adamant that The Royals don't fall victim of standing still.
Convey explained that at the end of every season he analyses how the club is improving.
Progression
"Every year you re-evaluate your position as a player and how the team is progressing. The players look at what is the best option," Convey said.
"You see how the club is investing in the team and how many players you still have.
"If you think the team is going to do well there are so many options. Losing players is difficult. It's self-explanatory - if you lose your best players you are going to lose.
"We need to keep as many players as we can and maintain the quality of our team otherwise we will lose."
Convey revealed that he hopes left-back Shorey remains at the Madejski Stadium.
Surreal
"I hope he stays. It is good for him that he has played for England and has raised the profile of himself and the team," Shorey added.
"That's how it is when you are successful. We were little old Reading for a while but now people are talking about our team. It was inevitable that was going to happen.
"The important thing is not letting it get to anyone's head. More speculation is going to happen to a team that is successful.
"But we still act the same. It's a bit surreal but there are good and bad things about being successful and this is one of the bad ones."
