Defender damages knee ligaments against Belarus

Kwak Tae-hwi will miss South Korea's World Cup campaign after hurting his knee during the 1-0 defeat by Belarus. The defender damaged knee ligaments during the first half of the friendly in Austria and faces at least four weeks on the sidelines. The injury means the Kyoto Sanga stopper will sit out the World Cup in South Africa, leaving coach Huh Jung-moo to consider who to bring in as a replacement. Suwon Bluewings defender Kang Min-soo or Hwang Jae-won of Asian champions Pohang Steelers are the chief candidates to claim Kwak's spot in the 23-man squad. Kwak had only been back in the Korea squad since last November after a lengthy spell out of action due to a knee problem. South Korea complete their preparations against European champions Spain on Thursday ahead of their opening game against Greece in Group B on 12th June. The 2002 co-hosts then tackle Argentina on 17th June before completing the group phase against Nigeria five days later.
