Luigi De Canio admitted the loss of three key players to injury before half-time contributed to QPR's home defeat by Coventry.
Martin Cranie was hurt in a tackle after just 20 minutes before Mikele Leigertwood and Marc Nygaard both limped off.
Akos Buzsaky made light of the changes with the opener in the 50th minute but Michael Mifsud levelled before Kevin Kyle headed home an injury-time winner.
And De Canio refused to be too downbeat despite suffering his first reverse since taking the helm at Loftus Road.
Priority
The Italian said: "When you lose it's never nice and especially in the last minute it's even harder - but that's football.
"We lost three important players and probably paid for that in the second half.
"My first priority is to get the team away from the situation it is in, then I have ideas to get us up the table."
Sky Blues boss Dowie, who is operating under a transfer embargo with the club heavily in debt, saluted his squad after a third successive victory.
"To come here and get a win is very pleasing and says something about the spirit of the lads," said Dowie.
Unjust
"They've got some big acquisitions for big money and some quality players and we knew we had to cope with that, but we've got players who aren't prepared to give up.
"If we'd have lost or drawn it would have been unjust. And I'm pleased for Kevin Kyle who has had an unjustly unfair time with the fans.
"Let's not concern ourselves about the transfers. With this group of players we will be competitive in this league.
"I would love to be able to do a few deals but until someone tells me I can we'll just get on with it."
