Miller and Darcheville miss good chances

Rangers will have to progress the hard way to the next stage of the UEFA Champions League after a 0-0 draw at home to FBK Kaunas. Walter Smith's side were frustrated at Ibrox in the first leg of the second qualifying round encounter and head to Lithuania next week with their European hopes hanging in the balance. Strike duo Kenny Miller and Jean-Claude Darcheville both wasted good chances for the Gers, who at least did not concede an away goal. Lee McCulloch and Kevin Thomson were passed fit for Rangers, while Miller started up front and had his name booed when the teams were read out before kick-off.

      Nervous

Brazilian striker Rafael Ledesma looked sharp for Kaunas but it was defender Linas Pilibaitis who flashed a shot over the bar in the 12th minute to agitate an already nervous Ibrox crowd. In the 19th minute Miller was left alone with only Kaunas goalkeeper Marian Kello to beat following an incisive Charlie Adam chip, but the striker was too tentative with his effort from eight yards out, allowing defender Nerijus Radzius to clear. Mindaugas Grigalevicius caused a moment of hush around Ibrox when his angled snap-shot from the edge of box beat Allan McGregor but also the far post. In the 33rd minute McGregor was forced into a good save down to his right-hand side from the impressive Ledesma who had waltzed too easily in to a shooting position 25 yards from goal. Miller sent Darcheville through on goal in the 40th minute, but although the Frenchman rounded Kello, his shot lacked the power to get over the line with Tomas Kancelskis getting back to slide the ball clear. Nacho Navo replaced Christian Dailly at the break and four minutes after the restart Thomson drove a powerful shot just wide of the target.
      Pressure increases
On 63 minutes Miller again found some space after Steven Whittaker picked him out on the edge of the box, but his shot was straight at Kello, who gathered easily. Moments later, last season's top scorer Kris Boyd replaced the tiring Darcheville to the biggest cheer of the night. McCulloch's drive from 25 yards shaved the post and then, as the pressure on the Kaunas box increased, Adam's drive was pushed away for a corner by Kello. Four minutes from time, a penalty box scramble ended with Novo's close-range drive being cleared off the line by Kaunas substitute Nukri Manchkhava.
