Owls and Robins play out drab goalless draw

Sheffield Wednesday and Bristol City were forced to settle for a share of the spoils after a drab goalless draw. Leon Clarke had a good chance to break the deadlock in the first half when he found himself one-on-one with Adriano Basso but the City goalkeeper saved well. Nicky Maynard should have put the visitors in front after the break, while Clarke and Marcus Tudgay fluffed further opportunities for the Owls. The result extends the Owls' unbeaten run to five games but leaves City without a win in seven, hampering their chances of keeping in touch with the top six. Gavin Williams presented the visitors with a promising opening after just two minutes, but no-one in a red shirt could connect with his lashed effort across the face of goal. The first real chance of the match came after 15 minutes as Clarke held off his marker well after being put clean through, only for Basso to pull off a smart stop to keep out his strike from 12 yards. Williams tried his luck from distance at the other end but a lack of ingenuity was hampering City's chances of really threatening Lee Grant in the Wednesday goal. Williams forced Grant into a routine save just before the half-hour mark before Marvin Elliott blasted over from outside the penalty area.

Great chance

Robins captain Jamie McCombe blocked Francis Jeffers' snap-shot from eight yards out while referee Rob Shoebridge ruled out a goal for a foul on Owls keeper Grant just before the break. Maynard was sent clean though within seconds of the restart but somehow fired wide of the target from 10 yards when it looked easier to score. Clarke fired a great chance wide at the other end just minutes later in a promising start to a second-half which produced more action than the entire first 45 minutes. Grant did well to palm away Maynard's powerful half-volley just before the hour mark while Stern John's lunge at the far post was inches away from putting the ball in the net shortly after. Tudgay headed Jeffers' corner wide in the 67th minute before Clarke again blasted off target when he should really have done better. The hosts were starting to force the issue as the encounter entered the final 15 minutes and Tudgay once more headed wide from Tommy Spurr's cross. But it was to no avail as the majority of the 15,542 crowd left frustrated.
