Maturity and discipline can make all the difference in a footballer. At 20, Kieron Forbes is hardly the battle-scarred veteran, but this influential central midfielder already commands a wealth of experience.
Maturity and discipline can make all the difference in a footballer. At 20, Kieron Forbes is hardly the battle-scarred veteran, but this influential central midfielder already commands a wealth of experience.
Kieron made his first-team debut for Watford when he was just 16 "that was incredible. Nothing beats that."
Either side of that appearance, there have been a few bumps along the road. "I've had lots of experience with some big clubs, trials, training, first-team appearances, but I haven't quite made it. But set-backs are part of any player's career. You just work on the feedback and prove yourself at the next trial."
After impressing the coaches last season, Kieron was invited back to the Academy. "Some of the lads see me as the older one. More mature is the way I like to think of it. That's why they call me Uncle. Plus I've got 11 nieces and nephews."
His experience is helping Kieron set an example on and off the pitch. He's already captained the Academy twice and was one of the few players singled out for praise during the team's defeat to Wycombe Wanderers.
The coaches believe he's the benchmark for the rest of the team. Kieron believes he can go higher. Follow the season to see if he makes it.
